Another day in the land of Job Seeking

Why your resume might be stalling.

We’ve all been told that "transferable skills" are the golden ticket. We’re told that if we’re hardworking, organized, and great at solving problems, any company would be lucky to have us.

But here is the tough-love Job Father Truth: Recruiters don’t hire skills in a vacuum. They hire skills in context.

When a recruiter sees a list of "transferable" skills that aren't tied to their specific world/role, it doesn't look versatile, it looks risky. They have to do the mental math to figure out if you can actually do the job, and most of the time, they’ll just move on to the candidate who makes it obvious.

The Shift: From "General" to "Safe"

To get the interview, you have to move away from being a "generalist" and start being the solution.

  • General capability feels vague (and vague feels like a gamble).

  • Role-specific capability feels like a safe bet.

Your Action Step for Today

Don’t rewrite your whole resume. Just start with one high-impact move:

  1. Pick one specific target role.

  2. Find one bullet point on your resume that feels a bit "general."

  3. Rewrite it so it uses the language of that new role. If they care about "Stakeholder Management" and you wrote "Client Relations," change it. Anchor your past experience directly to their future needs. And remember to always include a metric if possible.

A Quick Reminder

You might feel like you’re "pigeonholing" yourself by being this specific. You aren't. You aren't limiting your potential; you are simply building a bridge that’s sturdy enough for a recruiter to walk across. You have the talent—now let's make sure they can see it.Remote work doesn’t mean working all the time. Boundaries are key to making it sustainable.
